RED Camera Common Issues & Solutions

A troubleshooting guide for frequent operational problems

Overheating

Issue: Camera shuts down with temperature warning during long recordings.

Causes:

  • High sensor/resolution use
  • Poor ventilation
  • High ambient temperature

Solutions:

Ensure Proper Ventilation: Don't block fan vents
Adjust Fan Settings: Set to "Auto" for aggressive cooling
Use External Fan: Products like Wooden Camera Hot Case improve airflow

Media (RED MAG) Issues

Issue: "Media too slow," recording stops, or corruption.

Causes:

  • Damaged MAG
  • Dirty contacts
  • Incompatible speed

Solutions:

Format in-Camera: Always format RED MAGS in camera
Clean Contacts: Use compressed air on gold pins
Check Speed Rating: Use high-speed MAGs for 8K+

Power Issues

Issue: Random shutdowns, won't power on, or battery warnings.

Causes:

  • Insufficient power draw
  • Bad battery/cable
  • Incorrect settings

Solutions:

Use RED-Approved Batteries: 98Wh or 150Wh+ capacity
Check Cables: Ensure DC cables fully seated
Monitor Voltage: Should stay above 12.5V under load

Boot/Freeze/Crash

Issue: Camera freezes on RED logo or crashes during operation.

Solutions:

Force Restart: Hold power button 10+ seconds
Firmware Re-install: Download latest from RED
Remove Peripherals: Disconnect all accessories and retry

Image Quality Issues

Issue: Black sun/highlight blooming, excessive noise, strange colors.

Solutions:

Black Shade Calibration: Perform after temperature changes
Choose Correct OLPF: Skin Tone-Highlight reduces blooming
Expose Properly: Protect highlights in LOG recording
