Marantz 4230 Receiver Capacitor Tips

Safety Warning: The large power supply capacitors can hold a lethal charge even when the unit is unplugged. If you are not experienced with high-voltage electronics, have this work done by a qualified technician.

Most Common Failures

Primary Failure Points

  • Electrolytic Capacitors - The number one issue. They dry out, lose capacitance, increase in ESR, or leak corrosive fluid.
  • Output Transistors - Often fail due to power supply issues caused by bad capacitors.
  • Bulbs and Lamps - The iconic Marantz blue dial and indicator lights burn out over time.
  • Small Signal Transistors - Some become noisy (hiss, crackle, pop) with age.
  • Dirty Controls and Switches - Cause static, crackling, or channels cutting out.

Capacitor Replacement Tips

A full "recap" (replacing all electrolytic capacitors) is highly recommended for a 4230 to ensure it performs reliably.

Power Supply Board (P800) - TOP PRIORITY

Located near the large transformer and the two main filter capacitors.

Reference Original Value Replacement Suggestions
C801 10,000µF / 35V Main Filter Cap. Size is critical. Measure diameter/height.
C802 10,000µF / 35V Main Filter Cap. Must match C801.
C803 330µF / 16V Nichicon UKW, UPW, or Panasonic FC
C804-C806 100µF / 16V Nichicon UKW, UPW, or Panasonic FC
C807, C808 220µF / 16V Nichicon UKW, UPW, or Panasonic FC
Main Amplifier Boards (P700 & P750)

These two boards are identical. Re-cap one channel at a time to avoid mixing up parts.

Reference Original Value Replacement Suggestions
C701/C751 220µF / 6.3V Nichicon UKW (Muse) or Elna Silmic II
C702/C752 100µF / 16V Nichicon UKW, UPW, or Panasonic FC
C703/C753, C704/C754 4.7µF / 50V Nichicon UKW (Muse) or film cap
C705/C755, C706/C756 47µF / 16V Nichicon UKW, UPW, or Panasonic FC
C707/C757, C709/C759 100µF / 16V Nichicon UKW, UPW, or Panasonic FC
Phono Preamp Board (P400)

Critical for turntable sound quality. Use high-quality, low-noise capacitors here.

Reference Original Value Replacement Suggestions
C401, C404 100µF / 16V Nichicon UKW (Muse) or Elna Silmic II
C402, C403 3.3µF / 50V Nichicon UKW (Muse) or film cap
C405, C406, C415, C416 220µF / 6.3V Nichicon UKW (Muse) or Elna Silmic II
C407, C408, C411, C412 47µF / 16V Nichicon UKW, UPW, or Panasonic FC
C409, C410 4.7µF / 25V Nichicon UKW (Muse) or film cap

Additional Tips

  • Tuner Sections (P300, P200): Only replace capacitors here if experiencing tuner-specific issues, as this may affect alignment.
  • Polarity Matters: Always match the negative stripe on new capacitors to the negative marking on the circuit board.
  • Capacitor Quality: Use audio-grade caps (Nichicon UKW, Elna Silmic II) for signal paths and low-ESR caps for power supply.
  • Order Extras: Order a few extra capacitors of common values in case of mistakes.
  • Clean Boards: After removing old capacitors, clean any leaked electrolyte from the board.
